In an interview with the Guardian, Ingrid Betancourt has touched upon the downside of her release: how after the euphoria of freedom fades, there is the very difficult task of becoming reacquainted with the world. Six years away from family and friends and with only a radio to connect her to the outside world means there is much to be done to reawaken long-dormant senses and renew relationships.
There is much clinical documentation regarding the symptoms of trauma among ex-hostages. In addition to counselling, faith and a positive attitude do seem to help some persons overcome their experience, as was the case with Terry Anderson, held in captivity for nearly seven years in Lebanon back in the 1980s.
