Kidnapping in Turkey

July 9, 2008

Three Germans climbing Mount Ararat in eastern Turkey have been snatched by Kurdish rebels, say news wires today. The rebel group PKK has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping, citing the German government’s recent clampdown on PKK supporters and affiliates in Germany. The PKK has been seeking independence for Kurdistan since the 1980s, and has been deemed a terrorist organisation by several Western governments, as well as Turkey.
