Castro weighs in on FARC

July 7, 2008

Fidel Castro emerged from relative hibernation over the weekend to request that FARC release all remaining hostages held in Colombia. “If I may dare to suggest something to the Farc guerrillas, it is that they simply, by whatever means at their disposal, declare that they have unconditionally freed all the hostages and prisoners still under their control,” Castro wrote in an article posted on the Internet. Nevertheless, Castro stopped short of telling FARC to lay down their arms as part of the transition to peace.

Meanwhile, Ingrid Betancourt spoke in France about her desire to write a play about her experience in captivity, and some of the other ex-hostages spoke publicly about the arguments and friction with one another that resulted from their confinement.
