Mock hostage exercises

July 1, 2008

In an increasingly unstable world filled with kidnap dramas, mock hostage situations are used as training drills to teach persons how to mentally prepare for such situations, as well as to instruct those dealing with negotiations. The Israeli National Counter-Terrorism Unit carried out such a simulation at Ben Gurion airport this past weekend, to train the elite police unit in how to deal with possible airline hijackings.

However, a similar drill in France nearly ended in tragedy, after a soldier fired real bullets instead of blanks intended for the mock hostage exercise. Seventeen people were injured in the incident though fortunately there were no fatalities. The French army is assuring folks that it was an accident.
